Singing
Posted by Helen Noir on August 19th, 2008 filed in UncategorizedTwo weeks ago I performed in Dickie Beau’s post-Wizard of Oz cabaret at the South Bank, as part of the Dorothy Nights season. As the Wicked Witch of East London, and in collaboration with superstar cellist Natalie Clein, I turned Muse’s “Time Is Running Out” into a baroque aria. Its one of the few times I’ve worked with a world class classical talent and it was spellbinding. It’s amazing to rehearse and perform with a such an open-minded and generous musician and one with such depth of knowledge. Natalie introduced me to the haunting cello compositions of Ernest Bloch, whose works often draw on Jewish liturgical or folk music. We used these as a reference for the style of our second piece, The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind”.

Natalie famously recorded the Elgar cello concerto and her intense interpretation is beautiful and richly coloured. Her version of the first movement (Adagio) is as emotionally charged as any piece of music I’ve ever heard.
I’ve been asked to do more performances in the near future and after this experience I can’t wait.
